The Capital Striders will be moving the location of the Saturday training run this Saturday, Aug. 31 for ONE WEEK ONLY to accommodate the Hy-Vee Iron Kid's Triathlon, which will be using Gray's Lake Park at that time. We will relocate to Fitness Sports, 7230 University Ave. in Windsor Heights for this day only, and will start early at 6:30 a.m. due to the heat. This is ONE WEEK ONLY and is only happening ONCE. We are only doing this because Gray's Lake is being utilized by the Hy-Vee Triathlon. We will return to the southwest corner of Gray's Lake on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Come join us for this year’s annual picnic, which will be held on Monday, June 17 at 6 p.m. in conjunction with the Beginning Runners Group. Meet up at the Campbell Park Shelter House, join your fellow runners for a nice run and then regroup for a terrific summer meal. The Capital Striders Board will be grilling up hamburgers and hot dogs. Bring a friend and your favorite side dish (chips, fruit, veggies, dessert) to share. Beverages and dinnerware will be provided.
Due to the Drake Relays this weekend, the Drake campus will be closed to the Capital Striders’ Saturday morning training group. Instead, if you are still interested in running, we will be moving our start to Fitness Sports, located at 7230 University in Clive. The run will still start at 7 a.m. and offer up to 10 miles of supported run. Runners can choose to run less by turning around at any point, as the run will be five miles out on the Greenbelt Trail (out to the Glen Oaks Lake), and five miles back. Good luck to every one running in the Hy-Vee Road Races at the Drake Relays this weekend! There’s still time to sign up to participate, and all Capital Striders members get a $5 discount when using the discount code: bulldogs. And, don’t forget to stop by the Capital Striders both during the expo!
Don't miss out on the free Essential Workshop for Beginning Runners, on Monday, April 1 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Compass Chiropractic in Clive. This workshop will help you learn the concepts and techniques of low impact running style and proper form. This information will help you ease into running without pain or injuries. View this flier to learn more!
Starting this Saturday, March 2, the Saturday training runs will begin at 7 a.m., 30 minutes earlier than previous Saturdays, for the remainder of the training program. Participants are asked to be at Meredith Hall on the Drake University campus on time, as the group will leave promptly at 7 a.m. Hope you’ll be there to join us!
The Capital Striders will be moving the location of the Saturday training run this Saturday, Sept. 1 for ONE WEEK ONLY to accommodate the Hy-Vee Iron Kid's Triathlon, which will be using Gray's Lake Park at that time. We will relocate to Fitness Sports, 7230 University Ave. in Windsor Heights for this one time only, and will still meet at 7 a.m. This is ONE WEEK ONLY and is only happening ONCE. We are only doing this because Gray's Lake is being utilized by the Hy-Vee Triathlon. We will return to the southwest corner of Gray's Lake on Saturday, Sept. 8.
Parking concerns stemming from the overlap of the Capital Striders Saturday Training Runs and Yoga in the Park have led us to move our runs to the southwest corner of Gray’s Lake Park starting Saturday, Aug. 18. Water will be set up in the covered pavilion on the upper level of the terrace building. There is parking for 40 vehicles in the main lot and overflow parking is available and easy to find by following this map. We are glad to do our part to help with traffic flow at the park.
We hope to see you this Saturday morning (and every one thereafter) as we kick off our Summer/Fall Training Program. This is a great way to train for any upcoming race, especially a fall marathon. To help save paper and reduce waste, we will be cutting back on the number of printed maps we make available prior to the run. There will be maps to view as we gather, but if you want to carry one along, please print a copy before you leave home. Thanks and see you Saturday!
It's that time again... bundle up, pack your Yak Trax and head over to the Drake campus, Winter/Spring training time is here!
The kickoff meeting for this year's training group will be held on January 14th at 7:00pm at the Des Moines Marathon Office located at 38th and Ingersoll in Des Moines. This meeting is not required to participate with the group, but it's highly recommended if you're new to running, curious about details of the group or simply have questions like "How do I keep my snot from freezing?" (answer: you don't)
The first run of either 5 or 8 miles is Saturday, January 16th at 8:00am. All the details about where to meet up and what to expect are available on the Winter/Spring Training Group page.
